With a charming campaign, dynamic score and pleasing graphics, this 2020 instalment is a worthwhile purchase for fans of the series looking for more Olympic fun. Yet, given the fluidity of the focused sports games already available on the Switch, and the brilliance of those on previous Nintendo systems, it pales in comparison and becomes a hard sell unless you particularly enjoy the mini-game structure – or want a game that will keep a sports-mad family busy this holiday season. The inclusion of Cappy adds an incredible new dimension to Mario’s platforming move set. He also gives Mario a surprisingly versatile capture ability. Mario's ability to essentially possess objects and enemies could have been little more than a gimmick, but Nintendo wove it seamlessly into Odyssey’s gameplay and level design. Plus, it's staggering how inventive some of the captures are. Mario as T-Rex still makes me giggle.  With Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros Wonder, 2D side-scrollers make a comeback Just as Nintendo’s development has become intergenerational, so have its games; plenty of Switch owners now play Mario with their kids. Parents will be relieved to learn that there have been changes to the madcap competitive feel of previous multiplayer Mario games. You can’t pick each other up and throw each other around, or jump on other players’ heads, as my son insists on doing every time you play – and if you are a parent playing with a less experienced child, you can choose Yoshi and have your kid ride around on your back to get them past tricky levels. It feels significantly less chaotic.

A launch game for the Super NES, Super Mario World was an impressive look at what the new hardware could do. Mario and his friends looked better than ever before, while the game introduced new elements like punch gates and took advantage of the much-lauded Mode 7 technology to handle elements like zooming into enemies. It's also notable for introducing Yoshi, Mario's dinosaur pal, who functioned like a power-up and mounted ride with different abilities, such as breathing fire or flying. PC (MS-DOS and Windows) Assuming that this information tied to the next 3D Super Mario game is accurate, it seems like we could get our first look at the title in the months ahead. Currently, the biggest roadblock to such an announcement is that Nintendo itself hasn't confirmed that it's working on a Switch 2, let alone a new console. Still, rumors and reports have been circling for quite some time and have suggested that a release of the Switch successor in 2024 is essentially a guarantee.  New mario game
